In "Carpet Wonder Land," Lee Mok Yee embarked on an investigative journey during his residency at Rimbun Dahan, Malaysia. Drawing inspiration from the local Malay Kampung and hawker stores, he employed techniques like cutting, stacking, and collage, celebrating spontaneity and chance. His exploration centers on linoleum or vinyl flooring, a common material in Malaysian homes known for its affordability and varied designs. These designs, ranging from Islamic geometric motifs to imitations of materials like wood, echo the kitsch aesthetic of local stalls and residences. Fueled by personal memories of family gatherings on similar floors, Lee Mok Yee's installation emphasizes human interactions with these materials. The exhibit invites viewers to engage with free-standing and wall sculptures, offering a tangible experience of human gestures in relation to the materials and their architectural context.
